About Kelly Gerber's work:
Photo Theme:
Action Sports - Paintball
Photo Story:
I attended a competitive paintball tournament in Cape Town a few weeks ago. The weather was terrible and many players struggled to play through the rain all day. This particular player was part of a team that was not doing too well in the morning but kept powering through with water soaked clothes and their shooting equipment damaged by the rain. By the time I took this photo, the sun was starting to come out, and they needed a win to get through to the semi-finals. The rest of his team was out and he was up against 3 opponents. His calmness and confidence during this match was really inspiring, and he ended up beating all 3 opponents and single handedly winning the game for his team.
How long has Kelly Gerber loved photography:
5 years
How they discovered their passion for photography:
My boyfriend at the time had asked me to take some photos of him and few friends playing a game of paintball back in 2020 on my iPhone to post on social media so they could try and get more people involved in the sport after the Covid19 lockdown ended.

I very quickly fell in love with the way people reacted to seeing themselves on camera doing the things they are passionate about. I realised how much I enjoy the challenge that extreme/action sport photography comes with, so I bought a cheap second hand camera and started branching out into photographing other action sports too, such as motocross, sport shooting and padel. My passion for photography came to me in an unlikely way, and I’ve not looked back.

Paintball was where it all started for me and I’ll always be grateful for the boyfriend who asked me to tag along, who is now my husband.
