About Jade Hastings's work:
Photo Theme:
Hidden in plain sight
Photo Story:
I took this photo while working as an environmental compliance officer on a housing development site.
Before construction started, I assisted with a search and rescue to find and relocate species that would be impacted by the clearing of vegetation. This Cape dwarf chameleon was one of the animals we found during that process. It was calm, well camouflaged, and very easy to miss which is exactly why these searches matter.
I enjoy using moments like this to educate people about the wildlife that lives in spaces we often think of as already “developed” or empty. Photographing this chameleon was a good opportunity to show the kind of species that share our landscapes, even in areas earmarked for construction.
This image is simply a record of that encounter part of the work, and part of why I care about doing it properly.
How long has Jade Hastings loved photography:
4 years
How they discovered their passion for photography:
I discovered photography during my honours year while documenting fieldwork and it quickly became more than just record-keeping. It taught me to slow down and really notice what was around me. Since then, I’ve been drawn to capturing fleeting moments that are often overlooked.
