About Jessica Masego Nkuna 's work:
Photo Theme:
This image is part of my photographical body of work where I invite viewers to embark on a personal nostalgic observation reflection journey with me, inspired by familiar views of the church that once shaped my understanding of the world. • Some Black people are willing to convert to Christianity, suppressing traditional African spiritual practices. European-style education, dress, and social norms were enforced, replacing African traditions.
Photo Story:

Through intimate and often unsettling imagery, I examine the spiritual, economic, and psychological traumas that have indelibly marked my life by in institutions.
By exploring the tensions between the sacred and the profane, I reveal the ways in which these institutions have both nurtured and traumatized me.
I have observed
• Economic Exploitation: Black people were denied economic empowerment and , exploited for resources as seen at churches today
Yet, this series also seeks to subvert the ordinary and confront the extraordinary, laying bare the complex discourses surrounding my experience and observation of most post colonial religion, race, gender, sexuality, and youth concept by the church.
How long has Jessica Masego Nkuna loved photography:
Since highschool in 2017 I went on to study Television and Production at Boston Media House , a pivotal step that deepened her passion for visual storytelling and strengthened her commitment to contributing meaningfully to the arts. In 2024 I enrolled at The Market Photo Workshop, where I formally pursued photography. During my first year, I co-curated my first photographic exhibition alongside classmates at Transweerk Studios, marking an important milestone in everyones development as both an artist and curator.
How they discovered their passion for photography:
As a child I was part of a creative writing practice through the Anglo American Mine School Programme, where in early age exposure laid the foundation for my enduring interest in narratives that speak to lived experience and collective memory.
