About Janelle Billett's work:
Photo Theme:
Nostalgia
Photo Story:
My submission, “The Road Taken”, is inspired by Robert Frost’s poem The Road Not Taken. It draws on the idea that our choices only feel important when we look back on them. In the poem, the two roads were actually very similar, but the speaker later tells the story as if the choice was meaningful. In this photo, this idea is shown through nostalgia. The mountain of photographs represents a collection of memories and moments that may have seemed ordinary at the time, much like the similar roads in the poem. However, when we look back, these memories feel more important and emotionally powerful, as if they shaped everything.

At the centre, the photograph of my twin sister and me holds these memories together. It represents our shared past, but also shows how our lives have slowly taken different paths. Like the speaker in the poem, we look back and see our journeys as meaningful, even though they started in the same way.

Nostalgia becomes a way of telling stories about the past. It is not just about remembering, but about how we shape those memories over time. The Road Taken reflects on how identity is formed not only by the choices we make, but by how we remember and retell them.
How long has Janelle Billett loved photography:
Since 2022 my first year of university!
How they discovered their passion for photography:
I was first introduced to photography in my first year of university, and at first, it was simply a new tool to experiment with. Over time, I found myself drawn not just to taking photos, but to the way photography allows you to capture moments, emotions, and stories in a single frame. My passion grew steadily, and by my honours year (2025), I became a photography tutor. Teaching others gave me a deeper appreciation for the craft but it wasn’t just about creating images, but about showing others that photography is a lens we can fall in love with the world. Guiding my students helped me see the joy and meaning in every shot, and reinforced why photography has become such an important part of my life.
