About Upiwa Chiloane 's work:
Photo Theme:
The beauty in simplicity
Photo Story:
I took this photo when I was 15, on a school trip in Cape Town, at the time it was just me and my Canon digital camera which I especially love because it taught me that it is not always about the type of equipment that you have that will guarantee a change in the quality of your results, but it is rather how you make do with what you have that truly makes a difference. I love this photo so much because it truly marks the beginning of my journey as a photography.

It was this photo taken at The Castle of Good Hope, that truly marked my newfound self confidence in my ability to capture the natural beauty of even from something that may seem so abstract. After the photo was taken the rest of the trip was spent experimenting and taking more photos and building my confidence and being in awe of my own capabilities as an individual. I remember when taking the photo my teacher walked by and asked why I am taking a photo of a tree, even though he did not get it at the time I told him that once I downloaded the photo he will understand later. Despite him being very sceptical when he saw the photo later after the trip, he truly was astounded, especially considering I had taken this photo facing the complete opposite direction in which the tour guide was gesturing towards.

This is the moment I realised that perceiving the world differently to others isn't inherently a bad thing because it opens up the possibility of seeing a newfound perspective of not only the meaning of beauty but the understanding of 'life' around us.
How long has Upiwa Chiloane loved photography:
Since I seriously got into taking photos at 10 years old but prior to that, ever since I could remember, I have always had a very deep fascination with camera's (both the app on the phone and the physical equipment) and capturing beautiful moments (making them last longer)
How they discovered their passion for photography:
I got into photography because a teacher at my school in primary when I was between 10-11, started a photography club, so I saw it as an opportunity to finally learn more about something that has always interested me but has rarely been presented as an opportunity for me to evolve in it because my mom refused for me to have technology when I was young. It was also an excuse for me to finally get a camera so I could stop having to ask my mom to borrow her phone to take photos.
Since then I have continuously been growing in my photography skills and
