About Mabitsi Godfrey 's work:
Photo Theme:
Artism. Visual/Artistic protestation. Sitting on the only hope, hlala ethembeni. Fees must fall.
Photo Story:
Sitting on the only hope, the picture was inspired #FeesMustFall. Every year students in higher levels of education face student debt and financial exclusion. Every beginning of the year students across South Africa who are from marginalized backgrounds are striking and fighting financial exclusion, so instead of a physical protest which sometimes leads to student leaders being expelled, suspended and arrested, I opted to make an artism and protest artistically by using the the township phrase "Hlala ethembeni" meaning that one must always have hope and believe that they will achieve whatever they put their minds on no matter the life challenges and obstacles. So this is a fight for free education and decolonized education, growing up parents used to say education is the key to success but also the very same education is expensive and students from poor backgrounds find it hard to secure education and get a job to be able to feed their families. So this photography is dedicated to those who don't have the privilege to afford university it's a fight for them. To remind them that they are not alone and no matter the challenges and obstacles they must always remember to sit on the only hope which is education. This picture was taken at Wits University during the strikes early February when students were fighting and negotiating with the university to allow students who are from marginalized backgrounds and communities to be able to register and be able to education themselves and fight poverty back at home.
How long has Mabitsi Godfrey loved photography:
I've a sacker for photos ever since I was young. It's been 9 to 11 years when I first discovered my love for photography.
How they discovered their passion for photography:
I was in grade 9 when I first discovered my passion for photography, I found a D3300 Nikon camera in my parents bedroom, I started taking photographs of my friends, taking fashion pictures, documenting events at home like birthday parties, wedding, funerals etc. I became a family photographer since then as at home had seen my talent. Since then I've been very passionate in photography and I am following my father's footsteps as he was also a well known camera in his youth days, so I got the talent from him and it just grew more and more as I had the camera in my hands and freezing moments turning them into memories and archives.
