This image is a reflection of where I come from and how it lives in me. Growing up in the township, movement was always part of my life, whether it was playing in the streets, dancing with friends, or simply expressing myself without fear. The xibelani represents my culture and roots, while the barefoot movement grounds me in the reality of my upbringing. This moment captures more than just a pose, it’s a feeling of becoming, of carrying my past into who I am today. Through this image, I wanted to show that my story is not separate from me, it moves with me.

How long has Kelly Hlungwani loved photography:

I’ve loved photography for a about 6 years now, but my connection to it has grown deeper over time, I started perusing it professionally and more about 2 years back as I started seeing it as more than just taking pictures. It became a way for me to tell stories and express parts of myself I couldn’t always put into words.

How they discovered their passion for photography:

I discovered my passion for photography when I started wanting to document the life around me, my environment, the people, the culture, and the small everyday moments that often go unnoticed. As a film student and creative, I naturally gravitated towards visual storytelling, but photography became personal when I realised I could use it to capture my own experiences and identity. It allowed me to blend my love for dance, storytelling, and art into something honest and meaningful.
