About Silence Nemangwele's work:
Photo Theme:
Women Leading change
Photo Story:

Some people see a graduation gown and think, “The journey is over.” I see something different. I see the beginning of a new chapter.

This photograph was taken during the University of Limpopo Graduation Ceremony using a Canon EOS R7. It captures more than a graduate sitting on a wooden fence it captures years of sacrifice, sleepless nights, prayers, hope, and the courage to keep going even when giving up seemed easier. she wears a calm, confident expression. That is the face of someone who knows that success is not about making noise. It is about proving to yourself that you can overcome every obstacle placed in your path.

As I looked through my camera, I didn’t just see a graduate. I saw a future leader. A woman who represents thousands of young women who are rewriting history every day.

There was a time when many people believed that a woman’s place was only at home. Today, that story is changing. Women are becoming doctors, engineers, teachers, entrepreneurs, scientists, photographers, and leaders. They are creating businesses, leading communities, inspiring nations, and showing the world that talent has no gender.

This image is my way of saying:

Women are not waiting for opportunities anymore—they are creating them.

At just 21 years old, I had the privilege of capturing this moment. Standing behind my Canon EOS R7 at the University of Limpopo I realise that photography is more than pressing a shutter. It is preserving history, emotions, and dreams that will never happen the same way again.

This photograph reminds me that every great story begins with one decision to keep moving forward.

I know this is not my final destination. It is only the beginning of my journey as a photographer. Every graduation I captured every smile I freeze in time it pushes me to become better than I was yesterday.

One day people may remember this image because of its sharpness or beautiful lighting. But I hope they remember it for something greater the message behind it.

Dream boldly. Work hard. Keep believing. And never let anyone decide how far you can go.

Because sometimes one photograph doesn’t just capture a moment. It captures the future.
How long has Silence Nemangwele loved photography:
Since graduation 07 April 2026
How they discovered their passion for photography:
My journey into photography began in 2018 through videography at my local church. I started by serving during church services with the little experience I had. One day a woman at church noticed my passion and believed in my potential. She gave me my first camera and that moment changed my life. Since then I have continued to learn, improve my skills, and grow as both a videographer and photographer. Today, at just 21 years old, I believe this is only the beginning, and I am excited for what lies ahead.
