About Ayanda Mndau's work:
Photo Theme:
Veiled Inheritance
Photo Story:
Identify is often defined by what is seen, yet the deepest part of who we are, are carried beneath the surface. In this portrait, African beadwork becomes more than adornment, it becomes a visual language of memory, culture and belonging. Draped across the face, the beadwork serves as both adornment and metaphor, blurring the lines between concealment and revelation. Challenging the viewer to look beyond appearance and consider identity as something inherited, lived and deeply personal. Set against a vibrant orange backdrop, Veiled Inheritance reflects on the quiet histories we carry and the parts of ourselves that remain unseen. It is not a portrait about hiding, it is a portrait about what remains visible even when words are absent.
How long has Ayanda Mndau loved photography:
I’ve been in love with photography for over 6 years.
How they discovered their passion for photography:
Just before covid, I took a random picture of a friend just for fun while on a film set as a runner, and his reaction to the picture became the beginning of my photography journey, my passion grew from there seeing someone light up and see themselves in such a way that they never thought they could, their true essence in a single random photo captured by me.
