About Daniel Viljoen's work:
Photo Theme:
Wildlife
Photo Story:
A young lioness, not yet two years old, had just woken from her afternoon nap, greeting the day with a wide yawn while her sister eagerly nudged her, ready to play. Hidden just beyond the frame was their brother, the three of them spending another carefree afternoon together, despite the dominant male repeatedly trying to chase the young male away from his sisters.
At the time, it was just another beautiful sighting. The siblings wrestled, chased one another through the grass, and enjoyed the innocence that only young lions seem to have. I had no idea I was photographing a memory that would soon become so much more meaningful.
Just two weeks later, the young male was gone. Looking back, this has become one of the few photographs that reminds me of the last time I watched the three siblings together. It's a reminder that in the wild, every moment is fleeting, and a photograph can preserve a story long after the moment itself has passed.
How long has Daniel Viljoen loved photography:
I've loved photography for about two years. What started as curiosity quickly became a passion after I saw how a single photograph could capture a special moment and tell a story. One of my first goals was to photograph a bird in flight. It took plenty of patience and many failed attempts, but finally getting that shot was incredibly rewarding. That moment confirmed that photography was something I wanted to keep pursuing and improving at. It does also help having people around you who have more experience and can teach you and guide you along the way which helped me in so many ways.
How they discovered their passion for photography:
I've always been surrounded by cameras on family trips, game drives, camping weekends, and little adventures, but I was rarely the one behind the lens. That changed when my girlfriend, who's loved photography since she was a child, showed me that a photograph is more than just an image—it can capture a moment, tell a story, and preserve a memory forever.
Over the past two years, I've grown from using a Canon PowerShot to a Nikon D5000, learning not just how to take better photos, but how to create images that make people feel something. I'm still learning, but every time I pick up my camera, I aim to tell a story through the moments I capture.
