It was my first time in Stilbaai, a relaxing weekend away with plenty of opportunities to explore. We set out on an early morning walk along the banks of the Goukou River to soak in the beautiful scenery. I love being out in nature, and the birdlife in this area is incredible.

I spotted this little guy perched on the reeds, zoomed in, and just as I was about to take the shot, he launched into flight. He took off so quickly that I was convinced I had missed the moment entirely. When I looked back at the image, I was genuinely surprised — as the result exceeded my expectations.

What could easily have been a missed opportunity became one of the highlights of my morning. This photograph is one of my favourites because it captures a split second that almost never was. It reminds me that some of the most memorable moments in nature happen without warning, and sometimes the best photographs are the ones you never expect to get.

How long has Rene Lawrence loved photography:

I have loved photography for about 15 years now, quite possibly longer than that.

How they discovered their passion for photography:

I've always had a creative flair and a keen eye for composition. Many years ago, I was gifted a compact digital camera, which I absolutely loved. When cellphone camera technology started evolving and I got my first camera phone, it was a complete game-changer. Suddenly, I felt enabled and capable of capturing the world around me whenever inspiration struck.

Since then, photography is not been just a hobby, it is a journey, it is a passion, and when I am out there behind the lens, I am in my happy place - seeing, feeling and capturing; finding beauty in everything, and exploring different perspectives. As long as my journey continues, the fire within that passion will always burn!

2. It is an Online Talent Competition, which finds its operandi similar to other talent competitions like the America Got Talent show, The Big Brother Africa, MTN Project fame among others.

3. Registration to Participate in "The Master At Photos Contest" is Completely FREE. Note this.

4. Like in every other Contest, "The Master At Photos Contest" enshrines prizes for Its Winners.

1st Position: A Brand New Camera, A Premium Plaque and a Monetary award of R20,000 (Twenty Thousand Rand only)

2nd Position: A Monetary award of R4,000 (Four Thousand Rand only)

3rd position: A Monetary award of R2,000 (Two Thousand Rand only)

5. Winners of "The Master At Photos Contest" are selected by a Simple-Majority Voting system.

6. The Voting system entails a transparent form of anyone visiting a contestant voting link and then voting for them. 1 vote is R7 (Seven Rands only). And anyone can vote for a contestant as much times as possible.

7. Payment made as Vote on any Contestant (while in contest and afterwards) would not be refunded.

8. In the Policy of enjoining Transparency, Live updates on scores of each Contestant, are made Public and available on the Contest’s website via https://masteratphotos.co.za/contest - coupled with personalized mails and text messages forwarded to each contestant daily.

9. As by Law, Participation in "The Master At Photos Contest" is completely Voluntary and Contestant can discontinue at anytime, with the Caveat of Votes counted, being lost and not refunded.
