This shoot came from the heart. We were outdoors, just a backdrop and my 50mm nothing fancy, no studio. I wanted to create something that celebrated South African culture in a way that felt real, not just documented, so I asked a friend to model traditional Zulu attire for a personal project close to me. What started as a simple setup became something bigger the moment she moved. There was this joy, this pride in her posture, like she wasn’t just wearing the outfit she was living it. I wanted the photo to hold that feeling: the warmth of tradition, the confidence of a woman fully in her element, and a reminder that heritage isn’t something from the past it’s alive in the people who carry it forward. Every time I look at this image, it reminds me why I fell in love with photography in the first place the ability to freeze a moment that means something.

How long has Mojalefa Motloung loved photography:

I’ve been capturing moments on my phone for years, but it’s been just over a year since I picked up an actual camera and that’s when everything changed.

How they discovered their passion for photography:

I always loved documenting life through my phone camera, but picking up a proper camera a year ago is when it became a real passion. I realised I wasn’t just taking pictures I was telling stories. Every frame lets me capture a moment the way I see it, and that ability to freeze a feeling or a story in a single image is what makes me happy every time I shoot.
