About Thapelo Kgopodithate's work:
Photo Theme:
When the desert river flows — sunset over Kuruman at Van Zylsrus
Photo Story:
That photo tells a whole Kalahari story without saying a word:

*The story behind it is — The River That Came Back.*

For 10 months of the year, the Kuruman River at Van Zylsrus is just dry white sand, tracks, and camel thorn roots. Kids play soccer in the riverbed. Bakkies cross without even thinking.

Then in summer, far away up towards Kuruman and the Kgalagadi, the big thunderstorms fall. The water doesn't rush — it walks. Slowly, for days, it pushes down the dry bed. And one morning the village wakes up and hears it: water is coming.

Your photo is that moment. Late afternoon, sun still burning hot like only Van Zylsrus sun can — right above the trees, making that rainbow halo from the dust. The low drift is under water again, shining gold. The water is not deep, but it sparkles, it _lives_.

On the right, you see it — life stops to watch it. Two kids sitting on the warm concrete of the drift, legs stretched out, shadows long. Two men bending down by the water, maybe washing hands, maybe just feeling it because it's been months since they last saw it. The grass that was dead last month is suddenly green on the banks.

Everyone in the village knows this: when the Kuruman flows, you don't rush. You stand and watch. Tomorrow it might be gone again into the sand towards the Molopo.

That's why you took it from low, with the sun in the middle — you weren't just taking a river, you were taking a memory: _"We had water today in Van Zylsrus."_
