About Zandile Zwane's work:
Photo Theme:
The image is centred on the relationship between human and animal, with the donkey occupying the dominant position in the frame. There is a sense of trust, interdependence and journey — the donkey becomes more than an animal; it represents endurance, humility and the strength to carry us through difficult terrain.”
Photo Story:
I met this young man in the valleys of Lesotho as he was making his way home with his donkey. The donkey had decided it wasn’t going anywhere. Frustrated, the boy struck it a few times on its hindquarters. I asked him why he hit it so hard. He smiled and replied, “This donkey is stubborn.”

Standing there, I found myself wishing I had a carrot or two in my pocket. Perhaps persuasion would have succeeded where force had failed.

This photograph is about the quiet space between us—between a boy and his donkey, necessity and compassion, patience and frustration. It reminds us that every relationship carries its own unspoken language.
How long has Zandile Zwane loved photography:
For over 30years
How they discovered their passion for photography:
When I was in my late teens. Mandela’s House in Vilakazi Street was just being opened and the Hector Peterson memorial was also just being opened. I was young and proud of my township to have such landmarks of our history. I started taking pictures with disposable cameras and loved photography ever since.
