About Charlene Hardman's work:
Photo Theme:
Cinematic Portrait - Where the Light Remains
Photo Story:
Where the Light Remains
Nine months ago, my husband lost his father.
At only 23 years old, he was faced with something no child is ever truly prepared for — saying goodbye to the man who had been there from the beginning of his life, knowing he would not be there for all the chapters still to come.
I took this photograph beside a small plaque bearing his father's name, his date of birth, and the date he passed away.
Two dates.
A lifetime reduced to a space between them.
But when I looked through my camera, I didn't see two dates. I saw a son standing beside the place where his father's memory lives.
And I saw light.
The late afternoon sun was falling through the leaves behind him, creating a warm glow around his face and catching the edges of his hair. The tree stood firmly next to him and the setting sun, yet somehow the light still found its way through.
It reminded me of grief.
After someone dies, the world can feel darker. There is an emptiness where their voice used to be, where their laughter filled a room, where their presence was simply expected. You notice their absence in the smallest moments.
But love doesn't disappear when a life does.
It finds somewhere else to live.
It lives in stories told around the dinner table.
In mannerisms passed from father to son.
In memories that suddenly make you smile when you weren't expecting to.
In the things we do because someone taught us how.
And sometimes, it lives in a photograph.
My husband is smiling in this photograph.
Not because losing his father didn't hurt.
But because his father was worth remembering with love.
The plaque behind him marks the day that his father passed. My husband, standing in front of it, represents everything that continues.
The tree reaches upward.
The sunlight breaks through the darkness.
And a son's face carries both sorrow and love.
That is why I called this photograph “Where the Light Remains.”
Because death may mark the end of a life, but it cannot mark the end of the love that life created.
And nine months later, I have come to understand something:
Sometimes we don't keep the people we love alive by holding on to them.
We keep them alive by carrying their light forward.
And in this moment, standing beside his father's name, my husband was doing exactly that.
The light had not gone out.
It had simply found somewhere else to shine.
How long has Charlene Hardman loved photography:
Since I was a young girl.
How they discovered their passion for photography:
I discovered my passion for photography at the age of 15, almost without realising it.

Whenever my family and I went hiking, I found myself stopping along the way to capture the things that caught my eye — the mountains, the light through the trees, the changing skies, and the little moments shared with my family.

While everyone else was simply enjoying the hike, I was always looking for the next photograph.
What started as simply taking pictures became something much more meaningful. I began to realise that photography allowed me to preserve not only what a moment looked like, but how it felt.
Those early landscape and family photographs sparked something in me that has never gone away.

At 15, I didn't know where photography would take me — I simply knew that I loved capturing the beauty and emotion in the world around me.
