About Luke Lumgair 's work:

Photo Theme:

For a Moment

Photo Story:

I am a stage manager for theatre productions. This year at the National Arts Festival, my colleagues and I had just finished our first show of the festival, and it went terribly. Lines were mixed up, lighting cues were late and along with the general chaos of opening day. We left our first show feeling defeated and embarrassed because we all knew that wasn't our best work. We stopped at the South African Museum afterwards to debrief and share in our embarrassment. I brought my camera along because Makhanda has such beautiful architecture and scenery, little did I know that I was capturing a moment that I'd cherish. This photo, captured one of the moments we all shared together, laughing at ourselves. Finding community and togetherness in our less than stellar performance and found comfort in each other's presence. I love this photo because as cliché as it sounds, all we have is each-other, and we should remember to cherish the moments that bring us together, that offer us comfort so that the ever demanding pressure of the world that surrounds us is easy to get lost in.

How they discovered their passion for photography:

Photography is a great way to cement the moments that matter. Weather its celebrations, events or just nature, looking back at the photos you take are a great way of transporting you to a time that you hold dear. I discovered this passion through my art teacher in grade 12. He taught me that a photograph should always hold a deeper meaning to have the pictures resonate with the photographer and the audience. Attention to detail is important and something that resonates with me deeply.
