About Rone Watts 's work:
Photo Theme:
The reflection and the calm.
Photo Story:
I had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take a boat ride through Alaska to a glacier.
Along the way, I experienced something quite rare—a stillness and silence that seemed to quiet everything within me.
Just before we reached the glacier, I looked over and saw this mountain reflected in the water. It stood there still, strong, quiet, and incredibly powerful.
In that moment, I felt something I struggle to put into words. It was a reminder of how much space we are allowed to take up not only in the world around us, but within ourselves. That we can be still. That we can be present. That we don't always have to be moving, achieving, or becoming something. Sometimes, we are simply allowed to exist in our own quiet strength.
It was an incredibly moving moment, and one I know I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
With this photograph, I wanted to share a little of that feeling the calm, the reflection, the stillness, and the quiet power of simply being. A reminder that there is space for us in this world, and that we are allowed to take up that space.
How long has Rone Watts loved photography:
I have been in love with photography for well over 10 years now.
How they discovered their passion for photography:
I was walking along a beach in the Western Cape when I saw this big, beautiful mountain. I stopped for a while just to take it in. I remember thinking that there was no way I could capture what I was seeing, that a photograph could never do it justice.
But I was curious, so I took my first proper photograph. And somehow, my world shifted on its axis. Not only had I captured what I saw, but somehow, the photograph felt even more beautiful than I had imagined it could be.
From that moment on, I stopped looking at things and thinking, “This could never be captured.” Instead, I became curious about what might happen if I simply tried.
I think there is something beautiful about that. Sometimes the things we fear won't work are the very things that surprise us the most. Sometimes we just have to be willing to try.
And that is what photography has become for me. A way of noticing. A way of holding onto fleeting moments and sharing them with the world.
I don't want to simply capture beautiful things. I want to capture moments that make someone pause, feel something, or see the world a little differently. Maybe someone finds a little clarity in an image. Maybe beauty. Maybe hope. Maybe simply a feeling they didn't know they needed.
If I can give someone even a small piece of what I felt when I stood there, looking at that mountain for the first time, then that is enough
